MAGIC MOUNTAIN online writing workshop with Pam Grossman and Janaka Stucky
In times of profound change, humans have always ascended mountains—both literal and metaphorical—to gain perspective, seek wisdom, and return transformed. This writing workshop explores the powerful "magic mountain" archetype that appears across literature, mythology, and spiritual traditions. From tales of Mount Olympus and Shangri-La, to Thomas Mann's tuberculosis sanatorium and Moses on Mount Sinai, from the ascension paintings of Remedios Varo and Nicholas Roerich, to Darjeeling monasteries and the realm of Japanese mountain witches, we’ll scale to the peaks of our imagination.
Now, as we navigate a world in transition—recovering from global pandemic, facing climate urgency, and experiencing rapid cultural shifts—the magic mountain offers a compelling framework for our creative work and personal transformation. What does it mean to stand at the threshold between earth and sky, between what was and what will be? How do we capture the journey up the mountain, the revelation at its peak, and the transformed descent? Who are some deities and other magical guides we might encounter on the rising path?
Through presentation, guided meditation, generative writing exercises, and thoughtful discussion, we'll explore mountains as sites of solitude, initiation, perspective, and transformation. Drawing from diverse literary traditions and cultural perspectives, we'll uncover how mountains have long shaped human creativity and spiritual insight. Participants will engage in creative practices that use elevation as both setting and metaphor, developing personal reflections and imaginative works that harness the unique vantage point mountains provide.
